QCHSAAI Alumni History

The QCHS Alumni Association, Inc. (QCHSAAI) came into being out of the desire of the graduates of Quezon City High School, the first secondary school in Quezon City, Philippines, to renew ties with former classmates and with the institution that had played an important role in their young lives.

Thus, on March 27, 1992, the QCHSAAI was registered with the Securities and Exchage Commission to, among other reasons, encourage, foster and promote a clearer and more active fellowship, comradeship and cooperation among its members; and to establish a system of cultural, social or civic projects for the improvement of the Alma Mater, in particular, and of the community, in general.

The incorporators were: Guillermo T. Domondon, '57; Carmelita Caparros-Ramirez, '53; Braulio Batalla, Jr., '53; Eusebio Aguada, Jr., '53; Romualdo M. Dacocos, '83; Elsa Labayo-Batalla, '53; Isidro M. Cruz, '70; Florentino A. Tuason, Jr., '63; Eulalie Dua-Garcia, '57; Maria Salome Isip-Sugui, '68; Merlin P. Orallo, '54; Fabian A. Pobre, Jr., '57; and, Gregorio Ybardolaza, Jr., '57.

To realize its objectives, the QCHSAAI held the First Grand Alumni Homecoming on March 30, 1992 at the school's Gabaldon (formerly Main) Building. Of the 45 classes from 1949 to 1991, only nine classes were unrepresented. The affair was, of course, punctuated with dances, songs and lots of good eats. Also held on that day was the blessing and groundbreaking ceremony at the site where a multipurpose covered court was to be erected. This was the first project of the association; it also signaled the start of a series of activities that kept the alumni wheel turning.

Subsequently, the association's articles were amended to increase the number of trustees from 13 to 15, a bank account was opened, educational assistance was granted to QCHS students, and the plan to construct an alumni building was laid down the drawing board. The annual General Assembly and Grand Alumni Homecoming were eventually held every 9th day of April, each hosted by the class celebrating its silver (25th) anniversary, with Batch '69 as the first silver jubilarians for the 1994 homecoming.

The maiden issue of "Alumni Balita," a quarterly newsletter, was published in August, 1994. In November, the first medical and dental community service was held at the school's multipurpose covered court. In November, 1996, the two-storey alumni building (with a total floor area of 160 square meters) at the southwest corner of the school campus was inaugurated with then Q.C. Mayor Ismael Mathay as guest of honor. This was made possible through the efforts of then QCHSAAI president Bayani V. Hipol.

Other association projects included a feeding program, which provided free meals to undernourished and needful students in cooperation with the school's Technology and Livelihood Education Department. Then president Alan F. Paguia helped to make the program a success. During Pete Murao's presidency, quarterly batches meetings were started to reach out to the different batches for more cooperaton and better coordination. A career orientation program was also conducted for graduating students to help them make the right career choice. It featured alumni speakers who have excelled in their respective fields of endeavor.

Also during Murao's presidency, our very own website was set up as an effective means of communication and venue for information exchange among members here and abroad. The publication of "The Alumnews," the official quarterly newsletter of the association, replaced the defunct "Alumni Balita." In 2005, the distinguished Alumni Awards was revived. The success of the first-ever alumni sportfest in August of same year, after which sports implements were donated to the school, moved the Board of Trustees to approve a resolution making it an annual event to coincide with the school's Foundation Day. Thus, there would be three grand events in one year for the alumni community: the general assembly and grand alumni homecoming in April, the sportsfest in August, and the Christmas party in December. In that same year, the "Lingap Alumni" project was launched. It aims to provide assistance to members who are in need of medical attention.
